Tribe: Shipibo

El Planta Suelda con Suelda.

Lastenia Canayo was born and raised in the native community called Roaboya, on the banks of the lower Ucayali River, between the cities of Pucallpa and Contamana.

Her name in the Shipibo-Konibo language is Pekon Kena, and can be translated as « the one who calls to the colors ». This name refers to her artistic abilities for the ceramic and textile crafts she produces like other Shipibo artisans.

Aside from being a traditional artisan, Lastenia Canayo has distinguished herself as an original artist with her painted and embroidered representations of animals and plants together with their spirits. Her vision is completely unique and her work has been used to illustrate books about Shipibo culture and medicinal plants.

Each one of the paintings represents a beautifully simplified and symbolic figure: the animal or plant, and the image of its yoshín or íbo. The spirit occupies the main portion of the painting. The íbo and yoshín are represented with human silhouettes and characteristics that symbolize or recall their properties and powers.

Her paintings draw international recognition and were selected amongst a range of works by other Amazonian artists and artisans for an UNESCO sponsored contest, organised at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (UNMSM).

This new artistic creation, very rich and original, can be seen as that of an artist who has inherited: an ancient artistic tradition, an ancient animist culture, an uncommon talent and imagination.

This project is organised and directly coordinated with Lastenia with help and facilitation from the great team at Alianza Arkana. 1/3 Artisan, 1/3 Alianza Arkana, 1/3 Xapiri.
