These mini lances a are a replica of the full size lances the Matsés use for hunting and ceremony. They come from the most remote Matsés communities and are made by the elder men, mostly the remaining shamans.
See more about Matsés hunting traditions, including photography behind the lance making process via our expedition report here.
The dark wood is from Bactris gasipaes or pijuay nd the red string is home spun cotton dyed with a natural pigment from the plant ‘achiote or urucum’.
Size: approximately 46cm (18") - Please note: All lances are one of a kind and may differ slightly to photo.. this is the beauty.
This fair-trade exchange is organised and directly coordinated with the Matsés leadership with help and facilitation from the brilliant Acaté Amazon Conservation. This artisanal fair trade develops sustainable, regular and longterm economic opportunities directly benefiting the Matsés. The Matsés could not be more excited and enthusiastic for this project, which is being directly coordinated by the Matsés leadership with the support of Acaté.
