Matsés Exhibition 'Time is Life'
Time is Life. An exhibition where we invite you to enter the world of the Matsés - a world where life transcends time and where daily life is carried by the rhythm of the river, of the trees, and of the forest itself.
The exhibition was held at the Qorikancha Museum, Cusco, Peru from the 21st March - 13th May 2019. A smashing success in Cusco, we’re now looking to bring this platform of representation and the Time Is Life exhibition beyond our Cusco hub so please get in touch to learn more.
With an approximate population of 2200 people on the Peruvian side of their territory, the Matsés are the stewards of over 1 million hectares of Amazon rainforest. This situates the Matsés as not only protectors of a vast tract of remaining Amazon rainforest, but as defenders of a way of life that is threatened by the existence and encroachment of ours.
Their 1969 introduction to peaceful and permanent contact with the outside world marked the beginning of a new relationship to not only outsiders, but to their own collective identity and the isolated tribes that live deeper in the jungle. The Matsés today, like many indigenous groups, inhabit a space of liminality, with their feet in two worlds: the past and the future, the forest and the city, an ancient way of life and modern woes, timelessness and time-bound.
